Useful Life

The number of years an asset is expected to keep being useful to the company.

The cost is spread evenly over this many years as depreciation (straight-line). For what the company already owns, the model assumes it was bought evenly over the years before, so the oldest of it finishes first and its depreciation steps down year by year. Each new year of spending is spread on its own.
